The astrology of this past weekend...
One thing is clear: The Mars-Uranus cycle has become more volatile
Over the weekend, the Mars-Uranus square—a much-discussed astrological aspect in 2025 that was met with dread by most astrologers—coincided with an unfortunate act of political violence, when suspect Vance Boelter assassinated Melissa Hortman, a Minnesota State Representative and her husband following another attempt by the suspect to assassinate a State senator and the senator’s wife earlier that day (Boelter has since been taken into custody).
I spoke about the dangers of the square this past Friday, highlighting its potential thematic connections to the major events of mid-July 2024 when the conjunction between these planets took effect. Indeed, the suspect’s gruesome act in Minnesota is thematically connected to what happened during the conjunction of these planets at the beginning of their cycle last summer, when Trump was targeted at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In both cases there was some kind of political violence.
Now it’s worth noting that these hard aspects between Mars and Uranus occur quite frequently, sometimes within just a few months. If we were to trace Mars and Uranus cycles back in recent years, we often do not see it manifest as political violence. For example, August 1, 2022 Mars Uranus and the North Node conjoined in Taurus all at the same degree, and literally nothing happened.
What makes this cycle we’re in different? The key difference is that Pluto is now in Aquarius, so whenever Mars and Uranus interact harshly, we have to remember that Uranus is dispositing Pluto. This is a phenomenon that has never occurred in our lifetimes. In fact, Pluto is now in Uranus’ sign for the first time since the late 1700’s. Back in the late 1700’s, major events in the French Revolution were tied to Uranus and Pluto, with the Uranus-Pluto opposition building at that time.
What does this portend for future Mars-Uranus aspects? Let’s turn to the aforementioned key factor—Pluto in Aquarius. Pluto will remain in Aquarius until January 19, 2044, and while it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll see a recurrence of these reckless events every time, I do think Pluto’s position in Uranus’ sign—with Pluto’s darker meanings surrounding death and the underworld—does make Mars-Uranus aspects more destructive and also politically-charged. Remember, Mars is the god of war and can denote aggression, while Uranus can symbolize sudden, wild events and also has a political or activist nature. Therefore, the Mars-Uranus cycle might correlate with a higher incidence of shocking events while Pluto is in Aquarius relative to other cycles when Pluto is not in Aquarius.
Of course, the Mars-Uranus square also coincided with impressive demonstrations across the United States to stand up against forms of tyranny and executive over-reach, which also encapsulates the combined energies of these planets — fierce autonomy and liberty for all. But in this article I wanted to highlight the atrocities in Minnesota because they more directly connect to the Mars-Uranus conjunction from last July, indicating that it’s more likely for the volatility and risk to manifest in the political arena.
However, once Uranus is in Gemini (July 2025–May 2033), one has to wonder if there will be a revolution in political thought as well. Once it leaves its fallen position in Taurus, Uranus might take on more of an intellectual character and drive fascinating new political discourse, possibly leading to the drafting of new constitutions in certain nations. Revolutions in political philosophy are most likely to occur any time Mars becomes co-present with Uranus in Gemini between 2025 and 2033, especially when Mars reaches 9-10 degrees of Gemini due to its alignment with Aldebaran (more on that in a future post).
