Ready for the ultimate irony? Go through my videos from the past 3 years and you’ll find almost no mention of zodiac sign descriptions or traits. In essence, I don’t actually talk about the zodiac signs.
Meanwhile, most of the astrology videos you’ll scroll through on social media are doing something really well—turning people off from astrology. “All Sagittariuses are optimistic”… “All Libras are indecisive” are generalized claims that anyone can quickly disprove. Go find a Gen X Libra Rising with Pluto on their Ascendant or a Gen Z Sagittarius Rising with Pluto dominating their First House and they’ll defy those very descriptions.
And yet the prime gateway into astrology is the zodiac signs, which is understandable. We all want to represent our sign proudly, akin to a wizard’s unfailing loyalty towards the House the Sorting Hat chose for them at Hogwartz. But in truth, you’ll come to a much richer understanding of your soul’s purpose and your birth chart by prioritizing the Planets and their aspects to one another. After doing thousands of readings in the past 4 years, I’ve developed the conviction that planets are the primary conduits for energetic expression (and manifestation), with the signs being filters for that expression.
When I make a video saying “Scorpios are experiencing disruption in their relationships,” this is not dependent on whether or not all Scorpios are intense. The basis of interpretation is instead the fact that Uranus, the planet of shock and change, is opposing the area of the tropical zodiac we refer to as Scorpio, with the opposition mimicking the 7th House of relationships. Does it matter that the sign is Scorpio Uranus is opposing? I won’t be glib and tell you no. But I will tell you that the experiences of a Sagittarius in the coming years will be eerily similar to the recent experiences of a Scorpio due to Uranus shifting into an opposition with the next sign.
The last time I posted a video offering descriptions of zodiac signs was in the summer of 2023, in that case explaining the difference between Cancers and Capricorns. While the feedback about my horoscope videos are typically positive, my video simply stating the prevailing wisdom about Cancers & Capricorns was beat back mightily by a wave of commenters claiming they don’t resonate at all with their zodiac sign. I briefly dipped my toes into the world of sign-based astrologers and immediately was reminded why I avoided that side of astrology from the start.
All this said, do the signs matter? Yes, because planets rule specific signs and this rulership scheme reflects the planets’ very meaning. But it’s a big mistake to base your interpretation of astrology primarily on the signs. Of course the signs are significant, and even-numbered, by the way, because they stem from the bedrock concept of astrology — yin/yang duality. Astrology helps us achieve balance in part by understanding each sign’s opposite. But when it comes to the actual art of interpretation, I find that focusing on the planets will drive much greater accuracy.
For example, a Cancer Sun from 1975 conjunct Saturn in Cancer might not resonate much with the traits of a Cancer. They may in fact identify much more strongly with Saturn’s stoicism. Again, this doesn’t mean that the sign of Cancer is meaningless, but leading your assessment of someone with the idea that they are a Cancer is misguided.
This is partly why Vedic and Tropical astrology enthusiasts alike find my videos to be accurate — I’m grounding it in their shared language of planets and aspects rather than zodiac sign descriptors. A Vedic astrologer might disagree that the Sun is about to enter Taurus in an hour as of this writing, but they have to agree on when the next New Moon is, and a New Moon is an aspect between the Sun & Moon. They’re also going to agree that the Sun is currently squaring Mars!
While the signs are indeed sacred and help honor the entire concept of duality and polarity, I do believe the obsession with signs over planets has partly undermined astrology’s reputation. It’s much easier for a skeptic to assume astrology is “just putting people into one of 12 generalized boxes” when we focus on the signs. Meanwhile, a Mars-Saturn opposition will 9 times out of 10 reveal military experience in the immediate family, regardless of the sign those two planets are in. Now that is a powerful testament to astrology’s accuracy!
In order to help reframe modern conceptions of astrology, I’ve designed a lecture series about planets and planetary cycles. The class contains 3+ hours of pre-recorded lectures, and I’m also going to be hosting a live webinar on April 27th (the Taurus New Moon) to answer your questions and also present crucial additional findings. The course emphasizes the concept of retrogrades but it is truly about the entire cycle that each planet goes through.
Wanting to understand Cazimis? The best times to manifest with a particular planet? Want to leap off the 2-D understanding of a horoscope and jump into a 3-D perspective? Then I would encourage you to take the class. Enrollment is just $150 and includes immediate access to the 3+ hours of lectures (where you can also track your progress), a downloadable workbook with journal prompts, and eventual access to next Sunday’s webinar (which will be recorded for those who can’t attend live).
This class will solidify your understanding of the planets and why they appear to move backwards, how to master the retrogrades of each planet, and so much more. You’ll walk away with my blueprint to achieving excellence in the field of astrology.
Enrollment ends on April 26 so claim your spot in the course and the webinar now!
